Parksmart projects pave the way for sustainable mobility

With the number of vehicles expected to reach two billion by 2030, parking structures have emerged as a transformative tool for improving the sustainability of buildings, communities and cities.

Parksmart is the world’s only rating system advancing sustainable mobility through smarter parking structure design and operation, and this year, four new projects have already achieved certification, joining an elite group of forward-thinking facilities. Together, these projects are helping to improve customer experience, increase energy efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Hoy Garage

Originally constructed in 1986 and expanded in 2006, the Hoy Parking Garage is a primary parking structure at Cornell University for both employees and visitors to campus. With 850 parking spaces, including eighteen reserved spaces for fuel-efficient and alternative-fuel vehicles, the garage acts as a gateway to Cornell and helps keep cars out of central campus.

Shady Grove Garage 2

Shady Grove Garage 2 is a 700-parking space facility with five levels that takes an active role in connecting patrons to area amenities. The construction incorporated sustainable elements and was awarded Parksmart certification in April 2017.

How your parking garage can benefit from both LEED and Parksmart

Did you know that the LEED and Parksmart rating systems work hand in hand? Recently, GBCI released the Parksmart and LEED Synergies guidance document, which provides a detailed list of credits within LEED that can also apply toward earning Parksmart certification.

Garage at Post Office Square

The Park and the Garage at Post Office Square demonstrate what can happen when a visionary idea is realized through excellent design and thoughtful implementation. Supported structurally and financially by a belowground seven-level garage, this 1.7-acre park stands is a model for center city parks.

Garage at Post Office Square’s Parksmart certification recognizes the project’s parking performance, operational excellence, and commitment to continuous improvement over its 26 years of operation. These achievements include:

Stories from the parking lot: LEEP campaign spotlights

Last year’s LEEP campaign participants and award winners added roughly 65 million square feet of high-performance lighting in parking facilities and achieved an estimated 60 percent in energy savings. From military bases to residential housing complexes, hospitals to major retail chains, real estate developers to universities, the 2016 award winners represented the best new projects and retrofits in parking facility lighting across the United States.

How your LEED project can achieve Parksmart certification

Does your LEED O+M or BD+C project include a parking structure? If so, you may already be well on your way to also achieving Parksmart certification.

How Boston parks smart

This article was originally published as "Smart Park" in the March/April issue of USGBC+. Read the original version.

Boston has almost 7.5 million square feet of designated, off-street parking space. Wide swaths of concrete, asphalt and steel, often spattered with oil from vehicles and salt from roadways. The parking facilities in this East Coast city—and across the country—have long been an egregious land-hog. But that is changing.
